History of School Social Work

One of the sources I plan on using in my essay is a book called School Social Work: National Perspective on Practices in School. This source talks about the history of local work in schools as well as laws incorporated throughout the years.
One main topic I found useful was when the article talks about when one of the first times a social  worker was placed in a school. This circumstance was in a Chicago school, it started out as a program created to improve the relationships between teachers and students home life. This program called the visiting teacher program. The program was supported and well liked by the education systems. The teachers who implemented this program often used skills they refereed to as "social work methods", so that is way around this time when a full-time social worker was placed in a Chicago educational system.
The second topic I found interesting and useful to my research was the studies and evidence shown that the teacher visiting program was beneficial in leading to school social workers. They noticed that it was hard for teachers to manage their main job as a teacher and find time to visit homes om top of that, their case loads were far too much to manage. They were also required to understand different cultures, religions, and languages so they can communicate effectively.
I think that this source is effective because although this is no longer required to follow this program i think is shows the need for the job. That schools need professionals who are trained and given the skills to do that job and take the load off the teachers so they can focus on education. I also think it shows that demand for school social works is just not something we are noticing now but has been something the schools have looked at.
